no-fi!

No Fidelity is Carleton's first, foremost, and only music magazine and has been covering its beat since 2014. Published each term, NoFi features student content in the form of prose, poetry, photography, illustration, interviews, etc. NoFi also runs a music Imprint, releasing student-created, written, and recorded tracks to accompany the magazine's release. As a project of KRLX and The Cave, NoFi brings music and creativity together to celebrate our shared passion for radio, music, and art. We always welcome contributors to write, illustrate, and format our magazine.

German Music: More Than Just Nena

In today’s world, it’s pretty much a given that the charts are going to be dominated by songs in English. Sometimes the occasional Spanish or French song will pop up but for the most part English is what’s in. For that reason, music in other languages, especially German, has been overlooked. No one really thinks […]

One Music Director's most enjoyed songs of 2016, so far

Hi KRLX listeners! I knew you were wondering what the KRLX staff has been listening to in recent weeks, so I made a listicle of some of my preferred cuts from good ol 16. Walk to the one you love – twin peaksthese goofballs keep churning out excellent 60s inspired bad-boy rockhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzTQJq1lrMALife of pause – wild

Disco & House Songs You Should Play at Your Next Party

I’m a firm believer that disco and house are criminally underplayed at college parties. While I may love Drake as much as the next guy, I’d like to hear some more variety. If you’re feeling particularly confident (or particularly drunk) the next time you find yourself with an aux cord at a party, here are

Op Ed: Carleton NEEDS a Gogol Bordello Cover Band

Over this past summer I lived at home in a Chicago suburb north of the city. Each morning I rode the Metra into the city for work. As the train stopped at each suburb, a flock of old pressed suits boarded with their briefcases and their coffee. They found their seats and chatted with their

Rap Beef is the New WWE Wrestling

Everyone loves a good rap beef now and then. It’s another way to get some drama into your life when the 2016 election season is lacking. I feel like in the past few months I’ve been living in some alternate reality, because the recent drama in the hip-hop community has been surreal to

Deerhunter YouTube Rarities

Deerhunter has been making music, in one form or another, for the last 13 years. Accordingly, their ascension to the top of the indie rock sphere encompasess the entirety of the web 2.0 revolution of the ’00s, meaning that a lot of strange Deerhunter music and video is out there on the internet, but is

What Would Have Happened if I Had Gone to Shakey Graves

This past Wednesday, I almost went to go see Shakey Graves (my favorite musician) up in Minneapolis. I bought the tickets ($25!!! the most I’ve ever spent on a concert) a month ahead of time, I had at least two people willing to drive me, and I was super excited to see Shakey for a

NEW MUSIC WEEK SE7EN

Hierophants — Parallax Error   Hierophants is the latest in the trend of lo-fi semi-comedic bands, and they’re pretty great. They’re unique, however, thanks to their more 80s influences and cleverer than usual lyrics (“Every bridge, there’s a troll”). Filled with fuzzy riffs and even fuzzier synth, Parallax Error is a tour de force

Ambient and Ambiance: Music to Study to

I find it very hard to read while listening to hip hop. Similarly, it’s hard to listen to some downtempo folk when I’m going on a run. So what are the right types of music to listen to while studying? And more importantly, what about all these other different types of work: writing, reading, math-ing?

(A BRIEF) GUIDE TO MOOD HUT RECORDS//

An underground Vancouver label, Mood Hut Records has only just began releasing its sun-soaked and marijuana-addled house grooves on vinyl and electronically.  Until fairly recently, a significant portion of their releases were exclusively available on cassette and recordings were stubbornly hard to find. Thankfully however, Mood Hut has finally decided to join the 21st century

Women's Rights by Childbirth: REVIEW

The first time listening to Women’s Rights by Childbirth was a great moment for me.  It takes a while for me to discover the next piece of music I’m going to fall in love with for a couple of months at a time, but when I know, I know. You know? A pre-existing love for

New Music Week 3

John Grant – Grey Tickle, Black Pressure Grant’s new album kinda sounds like if Beck had decided to stick with the funky surreal route after Midnite Vultures. With ‘sick’ beats and real weird lyrics, Grey Tickles, Black Pressure is a cool new album that’s sure to please anyone who misses the time when really

Music From The Summer Of 2015

Ducktails – St. Catherine   On his latest solo album as Ducktails, Matt Modanile of Real Estate fame returns with the jangly, summer guitar pop that we have all come to love. While decidedly unadventurous, St. Catherine is Modanile’s most cohesive and mature album yet, featuring tasteful production flourishes from the likes of James Ferraro

Mac Miller's GO:OD AM: A Review

When I first listened to Faces, Mac Miller’s spacey 2014 project, I was convinced he was gone for good. Its chromatic instrumentation and Mac’s drug-plagued slang illuminated the narcotic purgatory in which he had taken up residence. The mixtape’s aura was bleak, casually despondent, and the rapper seemed to acquiesce to his hedonistic habits too
