no-fi!

No Fidelity is Carleton's first, foremost, and only music magazine and has been covering its beat since 2014. Published each term, NoFi features student content in the form of prose, poetry, photography, illustration, interviews, etc. NoFi also runs a music Imprint, releasing student-created, written, and recorded tracks to accompany the magazine's release. As a project of KRLX and The Cave, NoFi brings music and creativity together to celebrate our shared passion for radio, music, and art. We always welcome contributors to write, illustrate, and format our magazine.

The Humble Beginnings of Carleton's Favorite Radio Station

On the sidebar of this website and the entrance to the studio, there’s a note describing KRLX (look to the left under the “WELCOME TO KRLX”). I’ve read these two sentences so many times, I barely pay attention any more. But the fact that we’re “independent and completely student-run since [krlx]’s origin” has always appealed […]

New Muzax Week 8

A Whole Fucking Lifetime of This — American Pleasure Club Don’t let the name fool you; you might be familiar with this band. Previously known as Teen Suicide, American Pleasure Club is a pioneer in lo-fi semi-acoustic sad boy indie, and their newest album sounds exactly like their other albums, albeit a bit more accessible

KRLX Archive Deep Dive: Unearthed

I recently discovered that Carleton’s archives did a great public service by scanning and uploading countless yearbooks onto their database AND that these said yearbooks are accessible to all students. While this might not seem like a big deal, I think it’s really cool! And not just because I wanted to see pictures of my

KRLX.org: A Path Towards a Better Website

Issues • Listen Live: The main reason users visit content.krlx.org is to listen to the live radio. Accessing that function is the primary objective of the user and the website design should reflect that. Currently, the ‘listen live’ function is just a tab that users must navigate to and seems secondary to the KRLX blogposts.

Curious About the Record Library?

An Interview about Senator Paul Wellstone

October 25th of this year marked the 15th anniversary of former Senator and Carleton professor Paul Wellstone’s death. Wellstone was a mentor and an inspiration to many people, including current Senator Al Franken, who has been one of the most passionate advocates of Wellstone’s “feisty, fearless, and energetic” legacy (Franken). Senator Franken called KRLX on

New Music Reviews Week 3ish

If Blue Could Be Happiness — Florist This is a hard review to write. Not because this is a bad album; it’s pretty good. It has lovely vocals, nice instrumentation, a warm-sad mood that fits well with coming of fall. It just sounds exactly like Florist’s last album The Birds Outside Sang, so much so

Arcade Fire Gives You Everything Now

Arcade Fire’s new single will make you dance, think, and question what has happened to our society. This is their second new single this year with the other being “I Give You Power”. Now I profess that I don’t always love Arcade Fire’s general overly-dramatic stylings or their strange intricacies; but, I fell in love with

The Magic of the Movie Musical

No, this post is not about La La Land. Instead, I bring your attention to Sing Street, the third movie-musical directed by John Carney. Following Once and Begin Again, Sing Street has many of the same elements that made the first two films successful, but it’s most noticeable departure is it’s heavy play into nostalgia.

Uncovering Cover Songs

We all have those moments: when we realize that the iconic song by that classic artist is in fact just a cover. It’s a confusing and devastating time. For me this happened in the fourth grade when my mom casually dropped that Twist and Shout was written by the Isley Brothers and not the Beatles.
