Why did you choose Alex G?
He reminds me of home and he’s a really good musician.
Some people like to pick really popular artists for Bandemoniums, but I think they are a much more effective platform for exposing music enthusiasts to something they probably haven’t heard before. Alex G goes to Temple University in Philadelphia and I’ve had the privilege of seeing him perform in a few different basements. On the recordings he plays every instrument himself, but at live shows he plays with his band Skin Cells. His solo stuff is more introspective, his stuff with the band less so, but equally playful. Alex G is happy and sad, infantile and eternal. He is an incredibly prolific musician and has carved out a spot for himself as one of the youngest and most talented underground musicians on the east coast. If you like thoughtful beautiful and sad storytelling or crude groovy youth jams, then Alex G (and Skin Cells) is for you.
What is your favorite story/tidbit about the artist?
I used to go to this place called Maggot House a lot. A couple of my friends lived there, I once broke a 40 sitting in their diner booth, I slept many restful nights on their futon, I made hungover origami in a room wrought with sexual tension, and I met Alex G and saw him perform for the first time. Kevin or Keith or Kenneth, whatever his name was, pointed him out sitting on the couch under a giant unfinished painting on the wall of a naked man riding a bicycle and holding a baguette over his head. I introduced myself as a fan of his recordings and admitted I had never seen him perform live. I shook his hand and walked away. He finished his set by playing the opening theme to That 70’s Show three times in row, I reached out, palmed his sweaty face (he probably hated me), and fawn and I got the whole crowd to sing ‘Add It Up’ by the Violent Femmes before the next band set up.
What is your favorite song and why?
He has like 100 songs, so it’s not really fair to pick one. I tend to like music more by the album and less by the individual tracks. With Alex G it’s even hard to pick one album I like more than the others. To contradict myself I’ve been really into this one Abi Reimold song ‘Nuthing’. She did a song with Alex G on his album N1 and it really is more of an Abi song, very unlike his other material, but I like it, it’s called ‘Dreem Machine’. That album N1 might actually be the best snapshot of his body of work ‘You Are Great’ ‘Krying’ ‘Zuicide’ or ‘Skating’ are all great songs to start with. Sorry I can’t just say one song is the best song and why. It’s not that simple, the music is to good to treat it that way.
