A quote I heard from someone listening to Views for the first time was, “This seems like the other side of Marvin’s Room”, which the album really does. Views feels like it could be nestled in between Take Care and Nothing Was the Same and the only difference would be the new-school trap-ish beats on certain tracks (ex. hype). Don’t get me wrong Drake’s new album is far from terrible, I’m just saying it’s not ambitious and for an artist of his caliber he should take more risks with his experiment (although to his credit he has taken a more caribbean sounding attitude toward his music, but the entire industry is moving there). Drake should be revolutionizing the music industry like he has before instead of staying safe and following the ‘trends’ (he’s supposed to BE the trend).
There were some signs that Drake was headed down this road of ‘recycling’ his music and tweaking lyrics to match the progressing times instead reinventing his music. He progresses with the time, but does not progress as an artist. The need to stay a pop culture icon shrouds his true capabilities as a musician because the fans demand for the “same shit, different times” (trademark pending). We get it Drake, you’re a businessman as well as a musician so you’re worried about a varying amount of issues including ensuring your fans have summer bangers to jam to. So, I’m obviously going to enjoy the shit out of this album, but when I want to listen to revolutionary, ground-breaking music I’ll take my ears elsewhere.
Here’s how I think a mini-interview between Drake and I would go:
Me: “6 cold like Alaska, Views already a classic”, Okay Drake Views may as well already be a classic, but is that what you want, Drake, classic after classic after classic or something…something more?
Drake: Nah, I’m headed where the money’s at you feel me.
Me: Mhmm, makes sense, but did you get into this industry for your love of music and money just came or…
Drake: *Tears up*, man I’m tired of all you haters! This is what DJ Khaled warned me about, the “they” always want to see me fail.
Me: Wait, no Drake. I’m not like that…
Drake: *Continues*, all those memes, all those jokes they take a toll you feel me.
Me: I’m sorr…
Drake: Done. Me I’m just done in the hype, me I’m just DONE!
Sorry to say I can’t feed you Views on here, but here are some songs from the album Drake released as singles:
